Global demand for oil is an energy fact that will not go away very soon, as the world struggles to reduce the use of fossil fuels and replace them with alternative energy sources.
Campaigns Against Keystone and the Oil Sands
In the U.S., which depends on Canada for 15 percent of its oil consumption, there has been an increasingly high-profile campaign waged against the proposed $7-billion Keystone XL oil pipeline and lately, against Canada's oil sands. For Americans, there are clear choices: continue to import oil from Canada, increase the percentage imported from its most favored and geographically closet trading partner, reducing dependence on potentially unreliable foreign oil from countries like Saudi Arabia, Libya, Mexico, and Venezuela, among others, while improving delivery facilities from Canadian sources.
The controversial Keystone pipeline project, proposed by TransCanada Pipelines Corporation is one of the planned energy projects which has suffered from some unfair criticism, despite which it has recently received its third Federal Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) from the U.S. Department of State, and the application and now goes to President Obama for final approval, due by Nov 1, 2011.
