Kyrgyzstan played their first competitive matches in the qualifying tournament for the 1996 Asian Cup. Their first three games all ended in defeat, as they lost twice to Saudi Arabia and once to Yemen. Their first competitive victory then came with a 3-1 victory over Yemen in their final group match, a result which carried them into second place in the table.

For the next Asian Nations Cup in 2000, Kyrgyzstan were drawn in a qualifying group with Iraq, Oman and Tajikistan, with all matches to be played in Tajikistan, another former Soviet state and neighbour of the Kyrgyz Republic. The Kyrgyzstan side began with a 3-0 defeat against Oman, before being edged out 3-2 by the host nation. Their campaign then ended on a disappointing note with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Iraq, who qualified with maximum points as Kyrgyzstan finished bottom of the group.

The 2004 Championships saw the Kyrgyz side handed a relatively easy qualifying group, as they were pitted against Afghanistan and Nepal, with the games to be played in Kathmandu. However once again Kyrgyzstan made a poor start, losing 2-1 against the Afghan’s, who were then thrashed 4-0 by Nepal. This result meant Kyrgyzstan would have to beat the home side by at least three clear goals to qualify, and although they led 2-0 with almost half the match remaining, their were no more goals, and it was Nepal who progressed. Kyrgyzstan did not enter the 2007 Asian Nations Cup, and so their record of failing to reach the finals continues.
