The Karate Kid is a re-make of the original 1984 version of the film. The original version was directed by John G. Avidsen, and starred Pat Morita, Ralph Macchio and Elisabeth Shue. The 2010 version keeps the same story line, but injects it's own characterizations and subtle changes, which garner intigue and hold the viewer's interest.
The main characters include Dre Parker, played by Jaden Smith (son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, who also act as producers of the film), Taraji P. Henson, and Jackie Chan. The film is well directed by Harold Swart. It has visual splendor, yet is a bit long-winded. The film is set in China, as Jaden and Taraji's characters are re-located from Detroit in the best interest of mom Taraji's career. It takes a picturesque and cultural journey into the world of China and martial arts. Jaden Smith's character captures the heart as he journeys through turbulent adolescent growing pains.
Taraji P. Henson Shines in The Karate Kid
As Dre sadly leaves his familiar U.S surroundings, and friends, he travels with his mom to the uncertainties of a new land, China. They carve out a space in an apartment. It's unclear what mom's new career is, but, clear that her new livelihood must reside in China. Taraji P. Henson, competently grips her role as usual, with the conflicted energy of a single mom, grappling to make enthusiasm and practicality work for them.
